We All Need to Keep Showing Up

While listening to this wonderful talk by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, I kept thinking about Sit Stay Read and all of us who believe in the importance of helping kids learn to read.

Ms. Gilbert speaks compellingly about inspiration and how it touches us, but her summation is what really hit home. She points out that no matter how much genius comes your way, you still need to show up and do the work (of course she says it much better than that--be sure to watch the video.)

Although Ms. Gilbert is talking about the creative process, I was reminded of the importance of showing up for the kids in our programs. Showing up in the classroom each week, in the school each year, in the community as often as possible. By showing up for the children, we show the importance of commitment as well as the importance of reading. There's no telling where that might lead a child.

Many thanks to Sasha Dichter for first writing about this in his blog.

See Sit Stay Read on TV!

We were so excited to be included in this ABC-News piece featuring our favorite guest reader team, Beth Finke and her seeing eye dog, Hanni.

The students are enthralled as Beth reads an excerpt from her book, "Beth and Hanni, Safe and Sound" to demonstrate how she's learning to read Braille. After that, Sit Stay Read volunteer, Tara Gaffney, reads the rest of the book to the class and then Beth answers questions from the kids.

Rockin' at Radio Disney

How cool is it that Sit Stay Read was invited to be on Radio Disney?!

Board President MK Czerwiec and Sit Stay Read volunteer Sandy Virtue went into the studio today and taped an interview to air later this month.

They had a great time with Radio Disney dj Adam Welton and Patty Kan (far left). We'll keep you posted on the air date.

Dog of the Year 2009

Congratulations to Rocky Tucker our new SIT STAY READ Dog of the Year 2009!

Rocky's mom, Bonnie, was the winning bidder at Best In Show's live auction on Tuesday and secured the title for her handsome boy.

We can't wait to see Rocky's official portrait by artist MK Czerwiec and have Rocky be included in the student-authored books this year.
